AKRON, NEW YORK (November 23, 2016) – Akron Central Schools is pleased to recognize fifteen seniors who have earned Scholar-Athlete All Western New York selection by Section VI of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.  This designation is reserved for seniors with an overall grade point average of 90 or above for six semesters who are starters or important reserves on their respective athletic teams.
The fall sports for which Akron Schools participates include cross country, field hockey, football, golf, soccer and volleyball.  Nominations are submitted by team coaches to Section VI with the student’s transcript, academic and athletic accomplishments, community service and other school activities.
Cierra Janis, captain of the varsity field hockey team, and Matthew Jennings of the golf team, both won the top scholar-athlete recognition.  They will be featured with other scholar-athletes from Western New York in an upcoming edition of The Buffalo News and will receive a t-shirt recognizing this distinction, compliments of ADPRO Sports.
Additionally, thirteen students from ACS earned Honorable Mention as scholar-athletes in Section VI, including soccer players Cody Blasko, Tyler Jones, Dustin Earle and Alexander Warren; field hockey players Kayleah Aldrich, Lilyanna Berghorn, Heather Cummings and Sydney Leeds; Cross Country runner Michael Swiniarski; golfer Zachary Lydell; volleyball player Taylor Schlosser; and Christopher Borchert and Collin Frey of the football team.
“The amount of time and dedication these young men and women put forth to balance the rigors of high academic achievement with the competition of inter-scholastic athletics is truly impressive,” remarked Mr. Joseph Lucenti, High School Principal.  “They are an inspiration for their peers and adults alike.  I am so proud of them."
“These students are true ambassadors for our school, district and community,” added Mr. Stephen Dimitroff, ACS Assistant Principal and Athletic Director.
